Flight Planning and Preparation:

  • Legal framework and airspace restrictions for mapping flights
  • Pre-analysis of the mission area and objectives
  • Equipment selection (drone, camera, sensors, GCPs)
  • Mapping application selection (flight planning software)
  • Detailed flight planning (overlap, altitude, GSD, flight patterns)
  • Safety procedures for mapping missions
  • Exercise 2: Practical flight preparation and mission planning using software

Image Capture:

  • Ground Control Points (GCPs): importance, placement, and measurement techniques
  • Choice of take-off and landing points
  • Obtaining necessary information and authorizations
  • Preparation of the UAV for the mapping flight
  • Executing the automated flight mission
  • In-flight monitoring and quality checks
  • Post-flight checks (data integrity, drone condition)
  • Follow-up flight checks and data backup

Image Processing:

  • Introduction to photogrammetry processing software
  • Image quality assessment and selection
  • Setting up a new project in processing software
  • Aligning images and generating a sparse point cloud

  • Creating digital elevation models (DEMs/DSMs) and orthomosaics
  • Generating altitude curves (contours)
  • Performing basic measurements and volume calculations
  • Exporting final products

Practical content

This course incorporates significant practical elements throughout, including:

  • Hands-on exercises in flight planning using specialized mapping software.
  • Practical demonstrations and/or simulated exercises for data capture techniques and GCP usage.
  • Guided walkthroughs and hands-on practice with photogrammetry image processing software, covering the entire workflow from image import to final product export.
  • Working on a complete photogrammetry project as part of the training.

Exam & assessment

Assessment for the Photogrammetry Training is based on:

  • Active participation in theoretical discussions and practical exercises.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive photogrammetry project, which includes planning the mission, simulating/performing data acquisition, processing the collected data, and evaluating the final products.
  • Demonstrated understanding of key photogrammetric principles and processing workflows.
