FPV Drone Pilot Course

Embark on an immersive journey into the world of First-Person View (FPV) drone piloting with our comprehensive FPV Drone Pilot Course. This program is designed not only to teach you how to fly FPV drones with skill and precision but also to provide you with the resources and knowledge to become an expert in this dynamic type of UAV. You’ll gain hands-on experience in the assembly, mechanics, and advanced piloting of FPV drones.

A unique aspect of this course is the practical assembly of an FPV drone by each student, which will then be used for exciting FPV drone racing practice sessions and mastering various flight modes.

Course objectives

  • To learn the fundamentals and advanced techniques of FPV drone piloting.
  • To gain hands-on expertise in the assembly, setup, and mechanics of FPV drones.
  • To understand the components and systems specific to FPV UAVs.
  • To master FPV flight controls and maneuvers using flight simulators and real FPV drones.
  • To become proficient in flying in both stabilized and acrobatic (acro) flight modes.
  • To gain experience flying FPV drones in various environments, including indoor areas.
  • To successfully assemble a personal FPV drone for use during and after the course.

Prerequisites

  • No explicit piloting prerequisites mentioned, as the course includes simulator training. However, a basic understanding of drone principles or prior experience with non-FPV drones may be beneficial.
  • Interest in drone mechanics and assembly.
  • Please inquire about any minimum age or other specific entry requirements.

Syllabus

This course is taught entirely in person and is divided into theoretical and practical modules, including hands-on drone assembly.

Theoretical Module (20 hours):

Conducted in person in our classroom in Helsinki, Finland, by IDAFinland professional drone instructors.

  • Introduction to FPV Drones: History, types, and applications (racing, freestyle, cinematic).
  • FPV Drone Components In-Depth:
    • Frames: Types, materials, and design considerations.
    • Motors & Propellers: Sizing, KV ratings, thrust, efficiency.
    • Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs): Firmware (e.g., BLHeli), protocols (e.g., DShot).
    • Flight Controllers (FC): Firmware (e.g., Betaflight), PIDs, and configuration.
    • FPV Cameras & Video Transmitters (VTX): Types, latency, antennas, legal power limits.
    • Radio Transmitters & Receivers (RX): Protocols (e.g., ELRS, Crossfire), binding, failsafe setup.
    • Batteries (LiPo): Safety, charging, storage, C-ratings, and selection.
  • Principles of FPV Drone Assembly: Soldering techniques, wiring diagrams, component layout, and best practices.
  • FPV Drone Mechanics: Maintenance, troubleshooting common issues.
  • Software & Configuration: Using configurators (e.g., Betaflight) for setup and tuning.
  • Safety Procedures for FPV Operations: Pre-flight checks, spotters, failsafe testing, battery management.

Practical Module (20 hours):

  • FPV Drone Assembly Workshop: Guided, hands-on assembly of an FPV drone by each student. This drone will be used for subsequent practical flight training.
  • FPV Drone Flight Simulator Training:
    • Learning basic FPV controls and orientation.
    • Mastering fundamental flight maneuvers in a safe, simulated environment.
    • Practicing in various flight modes.
  • Real-Flight Training with Student-Assembled Drone:
    • Practical sessions in stabilised flight mode (Angle/Horizon).
    • Introduction to and practical sessions in acrobatic (Acro) flight mode.
    • Flight practice in diverse scenarios, including indoor areas.
    • Introduction to FPV drone racing techniques (if applicable to course focus).

Practical content

This course is heavily focused on hands-on experience. Key practical components include:

  • Complete assembly of an FPV drone from individual components under instructor guidance.
  • Configuration and setup of the assembled drone using relevant software.
  • Extensive flight time in FPV flight simulators to build muscle memory and core skills.
  • Real flight sessions with the self-assembled FPV drone, progressing from stabilized to acrobatic flight modes.
  • Piloting practice in different environments, including indoor flight and potentially FPV racing scenarios.

Exam & assessment

Assessment for the FPV Drone Pilot Course is based on practical application and demonstrated skill:

  • Successful assembly, setup, and maiden flight of the student-built FPV drone.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in FPV flight simulator exercises.
  • Competency in real-world FPV flight, including take-offs, landings, basic maneuvers in stabilized mode, and controlled flight in acrobatic mode.
  • Ability to perform flights safely in various scenarios, including indoor environments.
  • Active participation and understanding shown during theoretical and assembly sessions.

Who is it for?

  • Individuals aspiring to become skilled FPV drone pilots for recreational or professional purposes.
  • Drone enthusiasts interested in the technical aspects of building, customizing, and maintaining FPV drones.
  • Potential FPV drone racers or freestyle pilots.
  • Anyone looking for an immersive, hands-on introduction to the world of FPV drones.
