EASA Standard Scenario Training (STS-01/02)

• Understand the regulatory framework for operations under EASA Standard Scenarios (STS-01 and STS-02).
• Master operations planning, airspace considerations, and on-site risk assessment for STS operations.
• Proficiently conduct pre-flight inspections and UAS preparation, including flight mode configurations.
• Develop and apply emergency response plans effectively.
• Perform accurate and controlled flight maneuvers (VLOS and potentially BVLOS with observers) corresponding to STS requirements.
• Effectively monitor UAS endurance limits and manage flights in abnormal conditions.
• Understand and operate Flight Termination Systems & Parachutes (if applicable to the UAS type used/covered).
• Conduct thorough post-flight inspections, data recording, and operational debriefings.
• Identify situations requiring incident reporting and complete necessary reports.
• For BVLOS (STS-02 aspects): Understand pre-flight actions for BVLOS, airspace observation techniques, and operations with airspace observers.

- Valid EU remote pilot certificate A1/A3.
- Minimum of 10 logged flight hours.
- Minimum age: 16 years old.

(Note: Some external sources suggest an A2 certificate might also be a common prerequisite or beneficial for STS theoretical exams. Please verify if your specific curriculum requires A2 in addition to A1/A3).

This course combines theoretical instruction with intensive practical training. The practical training content includes:

Practical Training Content:

Pre-flight actions

• Operations planning, airspace considerations and risk assessment of the operation site
• Pre-flight inspection and machine preparation (flight modes)
• Knowledge of basic actions to be taken in case of emergency situations (Emergency Response Plan)

Flight procedures

• Maintain an effective lookout and keep unmanned aircraft in the field of view (VLOS) at all times (for STS-01 aspects)
• Perform accurate and controlled flight maneuvers at various altitudes and distances corresponding to a given STS
• Real-time monitoring of the machine’s endurance limit
• Flight in abnormal conditions
• Flight Termination System & Parachute operation

Post-flight actions

• Emergency landing in a safe area
• Post-flight inspection and recording of all relevant data concerning the general condition of the UAS
• Conduct a debriefing of the operation
• Identify situations where an incident report is required and complete the required incident report

BVLOS Operations (for STS-02 aspects)

• Pre-Flight actions: Operational planning, airspace considerations, and site risk assessment for BVLOS
• Airspace Observation techniques
• Operations with airspace observers

Intensive practical training is a core component of this course, covering:

• Pre-flight Actions: Detailed planning, site assessment, risk analysis, UAS checks, and ERP.
• In-flight Procedures: VLOS maneuvers, BVLOS procedures with observers (for STS-02), managing abnormal situations, endurance monitoring, and use of safety systems.
• Post-flight Actions: Secure landings, inspections, data logging, and debriefing.

Assessment for the EASA Standard Scenario Training (STS-01/02) typically includes:

• A theoretical knowledge examination covering all relevant EASA STS subjects.
• A practical skills assessment to demonstrate competency in conducting operations under STS-01 and STS-02 conditions, as outlined in the practical training content.

Successful completion of both theoretical and practical assessments is required to obtain the STS-01 & STS-02 certificates from the recognized entity (IDA Finland).

- Remote pilots with an A1/A3 certificate and sufficient flight experience (min. 10 hours) seeking to operate in the EASA Specific Category under Standard Scenarios.
- Professionals requiring authorization to fly drones in populated areas (VLOS under STS-01) or beyond visual line of sight with observers (BVLOS under STS-02).
